Misting a crested gecko terrarium. How often is enough?

Once a day, manual or automatic — everything you need to know about humidity and misting for crested geckos.

How often should you mist?

In most cases, one thorough misting in the evening is sufficient. Crested geckos are nocturnal animals — they become active after the lights go off and begin their natural behaviours. In the wild, they drink mainly from water droplets remaining on leaves and vegetation, so a light mist and droplets settling inside the terrarium are a completely natural way for them to drink.

Rule of thumb: One solid evening misting. Then let the terrarium dry out during the day.

Humidity balance — the most important thing

The terrarium should not be constantly wet. After the evening misting, it should gradually dry out through the day. Excessive humidity that persists around the clock — especially combined with poor ventilation — can promote mould, fungal growth, and respiratory problems in your gecko.

The right frequency and duration of misting depends on several factors:

  • Terrarium ventilation (mesh top vs solid panels)
  • Substrate type — some hold moisture longer than others
  • Number of live plants
  • Room temperature and ambient humidity
  • Season — homes are drier in winter due to heating
A wet terrarium is not the same as a healthy terrarium. Aim for a natural cycle: humid night → dry day.

Manual misting — good starting point

Many keepers start with a simple hand-held spray bottle, and for a single gecko this is usually perfectly adequate. It takes only a minute each evening and gives you direct control over how much you're misting.

A fine-mist bottle is better than a coarse one — you want a light spray that settles on leaves and glass as droplets, not a drenching flood. Aim for the walls, plants, and hides rather than spraying the gecko directly.

Automatic misting systems

Once you have multiple terrariums, or simply want consistent conditions without daily manual effort, an automatic misting system becomes a significant upgrade. It removes human error from the equation and ensures your gecko gets the right conditions even when you're travelling or busy.

Benefits of automatic misting:

  • Consistency — same timing and duration every day
  • Reliability — works while you're away from home
  • Precision — set exact times and frequency per terrarium
  • Scalability — one unit can serve multiple nozzles across several terrariums simultaneously
  • Time saving — especially valuable with a larger collection

Automatic systems range from simple timer-based units with one or two nozzles, to more advanced setups with multiple outputs and programmable schedules. For most home keepers, a mid-range unit with 2–4 nozzle connections is more than enough.

Summary

The goal is not a permanently wet terrarium — it is a natural humidity cycle: evening misting → gecko activity and drinking → gradual drying during the day. This rhythm mirrors what crested geckos experience in the wild and is the foundation of good husbandry.

  • One thorough evening misting is usually enough
  • The terrarium must dry out during the day
  • Adjust frequency based on ventilation, substrate, and room conditions
  • A spray bottle is fine for one gecko
  • Automatic systems are worth it for multiple terrariums or regular travel
